Are you too busy to work on your business?

I am too busy to work on my business.

In the many discussions I have had with owners/managers of SMEs I find a common theme, they tell me that they do not have time to prepare a strategy or even a plan for the future of their business. In most cases they are totally absorbed by the day-to-day work of their business. Sometimes they are so busy fixing problems that they fail resolve the source of these problems.

The well-used cliché that you must spend time working on the business not in the business is still true. Managers who just continue to operate totally consumed by day-to-day tasks will fail to examine the operation of the business to achieve efficiencies, re-organise and eliminate unnecessary tasks that they perform.

A business without a documented strategy is unlikely to achieve growth, sustainability, or reach its potential.

Managers must guard against our natural human instinct to bury ourselves in performing tasks with which they feel comfortable and avoid taking on the more challenging work of changing how the business operates and planning for its future. Managers will probably need some outside help to put them on the right track.

A question I like to ask managers is, what task did you perform yesterday that was more important than the future of your business?

At WMC we specialise in guiding owners and managers to take time out and plan.
